A jolt ran through his form, causing the male’s eyes to shoot open. His breaths came out long and uneven, another roar thundering in the distance. The insistent patter of rain droplets against the clear window seemed to calm his nerves, tense body relaxing to its rhythmic hum. He licked his lips, glancing around to absorb his surroundings. He was obviously in his room, due to its overly clean demeanor and perfectly aligned furniture.

His grey hues fluttered shut once again, a sigh escaping his lips. They opened once again when he felt something shift under his arms. A soft little grunt left her lips as she nuzzled her face into his clothed chest. He stared down at her, confused for a moment before realizing his situation. He often asked her to accompany him on stormy nights, for reasons he didn’t dare speak aloud.

He hated to admit he feared the loud crashes and flashes of light. They reminded him so much of all the fallen soldiers. With each boom, blood splattered across his vision. With each strike across the sky, a comrade disappearing behind a pair of red-stained bared teeth. Whenever she came to sleep by his side, his thoughts were clearer, although a fuzzy feeling remained.

The fuzzy feeling wasn’t from his horrific memories. It was from her. She brought a safe aura with her, a comforting presence that made his heart flutter with a simple glance her bright eyes threw to him. She was intoxicating, he longed for her to cup his cheeks and tell him everything was alright, just as she did every thundering night.

She seemed to enjoy his company as much as he enjoyed hers. She’d laugh with him, give him soft pecks of reassurance, she’d tolerate his odd quirks. She’d wake him up from his screaming nightmares. He honestly had no idea why she’d stayed for so long.

He knew one thing for sure. He didn’t want her to leave. She kept him sane, kept him from suffocating in his dark realm of thoughts, kept him from drowning in insufferable memories. And she loved him. He was sure she did. Why would she have stayed for so long if she hadn’t? Why would she put up with his nonsense if she didn’t care for him?

She was infatuating, so unique. The way she smiled seemed to brighten the room itself, nevermind his usual moody attitude. Her eyes were so full of life, they’d light up whenever he’d say something romantic, even if it was only hinted. Her entire being almost shimmered with an undying radiance that sent his heart sailing.

He wasn’t too sure if it was an official relationship. Of course, he’d told her he loves her, of course they’d kissed, of course they cared deeply for each other. But was there really a label for something so passionate? Their love was an ember, ready to be set aflame at any given moment. Though their idea of romantic wasn’t something too rambunctious, it was gentle, sweet and soft.

What would life with her be like without constantly living in fear? Would they be happy, normal even? Or would nothing change? Would he still be living in the shadows of his nightmares and memories?

She shifted again, brows furrowing as her eyes fluttered open. She glanced around before her bright eyes landed on his, a small smile gracing her lips. “Hi…” she said softly, voice a bit hoarse.

“Hey,” he responded, voice husky from grogginess.

She grinned, blinking slowly. “I thought you were asleep…”

“I was,” he murmured. “I just woke up again.”

She hummed in thought, eyes flickering down. “Was it a nightmare?” she whispered, looking back up.

He drew in a breath, about to reassure her that everything was fine. He stopped in his tracks when her fingers drifted up, running through his raven locks. He let out a soft sigh as she tugged lightly on them. She giggled at his reaction, retracting her hand to rest over his chest once again. He finally nodded in response to her question, averting his gaze.

She gave him a worried look, before drawing herself closer to him. “Don’t worry, Levi, I’m here,” she said softly. “You don’t have to be afraid of anything. You’re strong, I know you are.”

He stared down at the top of her head, her arms wrapped tightly around his torso. Her legs were about his as well, latching herself onto his form. He had to suppress a chuckle at her adorable state, only allowing a small smirk to adorn his lips. “Okay,” he whispered, hugging her waist.

She smiled, nuzzling into his chest as he kissed the top of her head. A comfortable silence settled between the two. “Thank you,” he whispered against her soft hair. Although she didn’t hear, due to her soft, steady breaths and the rhythmic rising and falling of her torso. He allowed a small smile to twitch at the corner of his lips.
